As an audiophile who enjoyed listening to music but who couldn’t play any instrument, I decided to pick up piano as a very mature adult. I figured that being able to play an instrument would complement my hi-fi hobby, with a bonus of improving my cognition despite getting on with age.

One year into private piano lessons on a digital keyboard, I was raring to get a real acoustic piano. For several weeks, I searched the internet and online forums, made calls to dealers, and came up with a check list of what my piano should offer. I shortlisted 6 brands to try out for my once-in-a-life-time purchase.

I roped in my piano teacher to accompany me to the dealers for try-outs and auditions. After repeated visits and deliberations, I decided to buy a Sauter MC 122 from Alvin. This model checks all the boxes on my list for sound, touch, workmanship and other features, including a Silent Play option which is important to me. I did have to stretch my budget, but it was worth it.

My impression of Alvin was very positive from the start. He was friendly, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable about the Sauter pianos. He took pains to explain the different models in the lineup, and patiently addressed all the questions I had. Alvin played an important consideration in cementing my purchase decision.

Due to the pandemic, it did take longer for the piano to arrive in Singapore. Once here, Alvin personally ensured it was securely delivered and unpacked in my apartment. Two weeks after acclimatisation, Alvin came back to regulate and tune my Sauter. It was reassuring to see the master at work as he took half a day in total focus to complete the task, while skipping meal in the process. The piano sounded glorious after Alvin’s work. Sonorous bass, lush mid-range and a sparkling top end. Alvin told me the piano will continue to settle in. I can only imagine how much better it will sound after properly run in.

I would like to thank Alvin that I found my end-game piano. Now I just hope my playing skills will eventually do some justice to this wonderful instrument.
